Sprouting Seeds, Sprouting Knowledge: Why We Love Garden Sprouts

The excitement in a Garden Sprouts class is contagious. Tiny hands gently brush aside the soil as a preschooler discovers the first green shoot pushing through the ground. What was once a seed has become something real—something they planted, watered, and cared for themselves.

Moments like these are what Garden Sprouts is all about.

Through our partnership with Fredericksburg City Schools, Downtown Greens provides 270 hours of hands-on garden education to preschool students in Head Start and Virginia Preschool Initiative classrooms. Throughout the growing season, children explore the natural world using all five senses. They learn to identify fruits and vegetables, plant seeds, care for growing plants, observe pollinators and beneficial insects, and discover how healthy food makes its way from the garden to their plates.

Garden Sprouts also nurtures curiosity beyond the garden beds. Counting seeds introduces early math skills. Observing plant growth encourages scientific thinking. Reading stories about gardens and wildlife builds literacy while fostering a love of nature. Every lesson helps children develop confidence, patience, and a sense of responsibility as they care for living things.
