Sun Wheels are ancient symbols. These archetypal symbols were first recorded in the Neolithic period, pre-dating the invention of the wheel itself. It is found in the Near East by the 8th millennium BC and through northern Europe by the 4th millennium BC. The design utilizes a combination of crosses within circles and has been part of the symbolism of every culture since the earliest of recorded history.
Sun Wheels symbolize rebirth, renewal, reaffirmation, youthful energy, mature wisdom, a changing of seasons, transitions, the cycle of life, light, motion, stillness and our relationship with the natural world.
There is one center stone, around which are four cardinal direction stones. The directional stone in the east represents birth. In the south, the directional stone represents youth. In the west, the stone represents wisdom and maturity. The stone, which sits in the north cardinal direction, represents death, or an end to a cycle.
In the outer circle, there are twelve large stones that anchor the bridge stones. These twelve stones represent the months of the year, and are connected by fist-sized rocks. These connecting rocks link the principal stones and form the wheel.
The twelve outer stones are each connected to the inner stones by four smaller bridge stones. These twelve rows of four bridge stones are also known as kingdom stones. Moving inward, the first kingdom stone represents the mineral kingdom. The plant kingdom is represented by the second bridge stone. The third stone represents the animal kingdom. The last bridge stone signifies the people kingdom.
The Sun Wheel is built upon sacred ground that has been cleansed and blessed, and its construction is overseen by a knowledgeable guide. Consecration of the ground is part of the process of the sun wheel's installation and dedication.
